THE NINTH PRINCE
Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a girl. (there always is) This girl was beautiful, and kind, and over all, smart.(like every other storybook girl) And her father (being the protective man he was) wanted someone special to fall in love with her. So he thought, who is more special than a prince? (nobody or he would have not thought of the princes) In this far away land there were 8 princes, surely one of them would take a likeing to my daughter. He thought happily. And sent out 8 notes, one to each king, asking for the prince to visit. There was no war in this land, so all eight kings decided they would answer the call, having nothing better to do. (this is highly un realistic, 8 kings and no war?please, if it were only 1 king there would still be fighting!)
But the daughter, who liked to cause problems as much as solve them, sent out an 9th letter. "To be givin to the lowest of familys" it said. And so a boy, who was not a prince, came as well.
The first prince to arive was from a kingdom of red (as you will see, they are all from a special color kingdom, why? I don't know) The red prince liked the daughter instantly (what an original idea) and said
"Dearest beauty, i would love you for the rest of my days, if you would be my wife."
The girl smiled, "prove your love, and i will accept."
The red prince pulled nine red roses from behind his back and offered them to her. But she was not convinced, and kindly said,
"Im sorry, but love is not roses."
A few days later the prince of the orange kingdom arived. It was not long before he too was smitten. After only an hour he had preposed.
The daughter smiled at the prince, knowing what her answer was, but not wanting to be rude (or perhaps just wanting a joke) she said,
"if you can prove your love, i will accept."
So the orange prince pulled eight beautiful dresses from his carrige.
"Will you accept these as a symbol of my love."
But the daughter was not impressed and sent him on his way. (good, any dress that is orange should be burned to ash)
"Love is not dresses" she said.
The next day the third prince showed up, in a yellow carrige. And as the first two, he liked the daughter quite well. "If you will have me, i will give you anything you desire." The daughter smiled, thinking to herself even something purple? For all the princes had been dressed in their kingdoms colors, and this prince was birght yellow. But she said, as she had twice before,
"I will accept if you can prove your love to me" The prince smiled, (were his teeth yellow too?) and handed her seven yellow necklaces.
But the girl did not acept (tisk tisk, so picky) "Love is not necklaces, im sorry" and sent another one away.
As you can imagine, the next prince was green, and gave her six green canaries. The one after that gave her five blue musicans. The next, four purple shoes, And then three silver horses, and finally the gold prince gave her two golden rings. And she very nearly gave in to him, But she knew of people who were married but not in love, and sent the final prince away. (such a heart breaker) The father was beside himself with worry, he agreed that his daughter should love her husband, but if none of the princes were worthy, then who could she possibly love?
The dauther only smiled and waited, for only she knew of the 9th note.
Four days after the gold prince left in his mighty carrige, a young boy on an old black horse plodded up to the house.
The daughter listened as the boy convinced her father to at least let him try to win his daughters heart. And she was impressed, for he had a way with words. The father relented, and as the boy entered the room, he did not have to see her to know she was the one. He boy, covered in dirt and filth, sat carefuly beside the girl and said only two words.
The girl was startled, all the others had asked with glamor and charm, be he was straight forward.
"Not unless you can prove your love" she said, determined to put him to the same test as the rest. The boy smiled. "first tell me what the princes gave you." and so she did.
9 red roses
8 orange dresses
7 yellow necklaces
6 green canaries
5 blue musicans
4 purple shoes
3 silver horses
and 2 gold rings
The boy thought far a long time. "But love is not gifts and promises" he said calmly, looking into her eyes.
"Love is an action, an endless series of movements that create what we think of as our lives."
"Is that your answer?" the daughter asked, dissapointed (like i said, PICKY)
The boy shook his head, Leaned in and gave her a long soft kiss.
"That is love"
