Since the plan is for the entire MB to be deleted, and no copy saved publically, I decided to do something about it. After all, a lot of us have lots of memories here, and stories, and I for one would like to be able to come back to it and browse, just for nostalgic reasons.
And so, I archived the entire MB - every single remaining topic and user - on the Wayback Machine.
First, I manually went through and archived some of the more important threads (such as stories). Then I realized that it'd probably be a good idea to not archive 10,000+ topic pages manually (not even counting user pages).
So I figured out how to automate it, and... did that. It took around a week for me to finally get it all done, which means that most of the new topics from the past week haven't been archoved yet, but almost all of the history of the MB that remained after a bunch of stuff was deleted has been saved to the Wayback Machine.
For those interested in how I did it, I ran "wget -m [site URL]" to create a local mirror of the site on my computer. It took just over 13 hours for that to run. I then used curl to automate archiving each thread, one page at a time, since there's no built-in way to archive an entire site, only for single pages at a time. It took around a week to get it to work properly, and about 30 hours to run fully when I got it working.
So... yeah. I plan to do it again after the MB goes read-only, but if I don't get to it in time, at least most of it is already archived.
At some point in time, several posts on the MB appear to have been corrupted. Their contents were replaced with strange special characters. Every time my script came across one of those, it crashed. So I had to remove that thread from the script and archive it manually later. (This includes stuff like the Ban Game and Corrupt-a-Wish.)
