I see my father. He points at me and the guards run after me with swords and spears. I run in fear. I hide in the grass. I see them go to the village where the slaves are, hurting the people with no reason, then stealing the babies. I then see William, Oriel, and their mother, when they are younger. I follow them. They run, hiding from the guards. I see them put a baby in the stream in a basket, and I notice the baby looks like me. The guards catch up to me and I fall into the stream with babies and Crocodiles.
I pant. It's still night. I run into many hallways, where the more recent history is painted. I must find the truth! I see a picture of Father pointing to babies in the guards hands and the babies falling into the river with crocodiles. I drop my candle and my slowly sit down.
"It's true. I'm not a Princess. I'm not even close! I'm a slave."
Father says, "The Australians were growing too strong, Scarlet. They might have risen against us."
I turn to him and whisper, "Father, tell me you didn't do this!"
He sighs, "Scarlet, sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made."
I stand up.
He hugs me and says, "Oh, my daughter, They were only slaves."
That did it. That sent my heart into overdrive.
"Only slaves? ONLY SLAVES?!"
I back away from him and run away to my room, crying my eyes out, wiping them with my green and gold, silk hankerchief.
*In the morning*
I sit down at the stream.
"Scarlet?" Mother asks.
Why am I even calling her Mother?
I ask, "Is this where you found me?"
She sighs, "Scarlet, please try to understand."
I sigh, "So... So everything I thought... everything I am... is a lie."
Mother says, "No! You are our daughter, and we love you!"
I ask, "Why did you choose me?"
She says, "We didn't, Scarlet. The Gods did."
This is getting rediculous.
She sings, "This is your home, my girl
Here the river brought you
and it's here the river meant
to be your home
Now you know the truth, love
Now forget and be content
When the Gods send you a blessing,
You don't ask why it was sent."
I hug her. She may be the only one close to my real family.
"You must go to Crystal. She's busy building some more buildings for our empire."
I nod and walk away.
I hear my sister talking about how to make our empire greater. I look at the slaves. My heart breaks to see them being totured. These are my people. Crystal comes to me.
"Scarlet! Fate has turned our misadventure into a great opertunity!"
I don't pay attention. I hear a guard beating up an Australian because he's "Being Lazy." The truth is, he's too old. I notice my true family. William taps Oriel. Oriel works harder.
The whip cracks when I hear William yell, "Stop it!"
I turn, my heart bleeding. I run to the guard beating up the old slave.
"Stop it." I whisper. "Stop! Stop it! Leave that man alone!"
I jump on the guard, just meaning to stop the whip, but I accidentally push the guard off the platform, to the hard ground.
"Who did this?"
I turn to my people.
I point to my true siblings, "You two, with me. Come on!"
Everyone except them back away from me. I run as fast as I can to get away. To leave the kingdom.
Crystal grabs me and asks, "Scarlet, what's going on?"
I push her off and run. William and Oriel try to keep up.
Crystal yells, "Scarlet!"
My true family and I run as fast as we can to the end of the castle when Crystal overtakes us.
I say, "Let us go!"
Crystal says, "Scarlet!"
I exclaim, "You saw what happened! I just killed a man!"
Crystal says, "We can take care of that! I will make it so it never happened!"
I complain, "Nothing you can say will change what I've done!"
Crystal says, "I am our kingdom! The morning and the evening star! If I say day is night it will be written, and you will be what I say you are! I say you are innocent!"
I yell, "What you say does not matter! You don't understand! I can't stay here any longer!"
Crystal sighs, "Scarlet..."
I exclaim, "NO! All I've ever known to be true is a lie! I'm not who you think I am."
Oriel and William stare at me.
Crystal asks "What are you talking about?"
I growl, "Ask the man I once called "Father"!"
Crystal asks, "Scarlet? Please..."
I whisper, "Goodbye, sister. You two, come on."
We run into the desert.
