I love it when Mama Dola comes when it isn't her shift. I know it's kind of selfish because she ends up spending so much time here anyways, but it's hard not to be happy when you see her.
"Who's the guy Mama Dola's talking to?"
"Tim, I think."
"Huh. Here you go." He hands me the plate of pancakes and sausage which I take out to Mama Dola.
"Thank you, Grace, it looks delicious. Give my compliments to Ross."
I nod at her and smile, then go to take the order of a small family that just came in.
"Hi, I'm Grace. Welcome to the Soul-of-the-City Diner, what you folks like to drink?"
"Uh... a coffee, please. The menu says something about a snickerdoodle flavor, can I..?"
"One snickerdoodle coffe, and for you kids?" The dark haired mother looks over at her four children and the youngest almost immediately says, "Orange juice, and can I tell you something?"
I smile at him, and the exasperated looks on his sibling's faces. "Sure. How about after your brother and sisters order their drinks though."
THe oldest daughter smiles gratefully and looks over the menu.
"May I have lemonade, please?"
"Umm-hmm. And you?"
"A water, please." The other girl.
"Can I get a lemonade too, please?" THe older boy.
"Sure you can. I'll be out in just a minute with your drinks, but first what did you want to tell me....?"
"What did you want to say Oaken?"
"Did you know the differences between alligators and crocodiles?"
"No, I don-"
"Well, crocodiles have a pointy snout, and alligators have rounded snouts. And crocodiles are usually green-ish, but alligators are usually more of a grey-ish color. They live in different habitats too. Even their teeth are different! But people keep mixing them up."
"Well that's silly, they're obviously different."
He nods in agreement while the others try not to laugh and I smile.
"I'm gonna go get your drinks now."
"Mama Dola thought the pancakes looked very good."
"Well that's good."
"You seem quiet today. Quieter then usual."
He looks up from where he's working on fixing someone's bacon and eggs over to where I'm getting the family's drinks.
"Is that a problem?"
"No, I'm just curious."
"It's nothing, I'm just thinking about visiting my wives parents today."
"Oh. Good luck!"
I turn and walk out, four cups balanced on one plate, and the orange juice in my hand.
"Here you go! Now what can I get you all to eat?"
"I'd like the sausage, pancakes, bacon, and biscuts."
I look over at Oaken with surprise.
"And corn beef hash too!!"
"I'll help him with all that." I nod at the older brother in understanding then look over at their mom.
"And for you ma'am?"
"I'll take the omelet, please."
"OKay. What sort of cheese would you like? We have american, cheddar..."
"Cheddar please. And ham and onions and spinach, please."
"Got it. And for you three?"
"I'd like the kids omelet please, with yogurt parfait on the side."
"I'd like the hash brown casserole and bacon."
"I have allergies...."
I make a note of that and look over at the oldest girl.
"Okay. What are you allergic too?"
"Peanuts, treenuts, sesame, and shellfish."
"Well, we don't use peanut oil and I can pretty much tell you if anything has anything you're allergic too."
"Those don't have anything."
"YES!!!" She pumps a fist in the air before looking around with embarrasment.
"Sorry, I just can't usually get pancakes..."
"You're fine. For a side?"
"Can I have the fried apples please?"
"You certainly can. I'll have the food out to you in ten minutes at most."
"Did you know that the platypus is the most mysterious animal ever? When the first abor..abor...aborgines? I mean, when the first Europeans got there they thought it was a prank. And platypus are the only mammals who can lay eggs besides the echidna. And when they're under water they have their eyes, nostrels, and ears closed. And they have a sixth sense so they can find food and not bump in to things."
"I have one named Cutie-Pie." He holds up a stuffed toy and I laugh when his mom sighs.
"I'm going to go get your food now, If there are no other animal facts I need to know before going to the kitchen."
THe older brother wraps an arm around the younger one.
I giggle when I walk away and hear, "But Isaiah... I wanted to tell her about sharks and dolphins and black footed ferrets and tasmanian tigers and..."
I hand Ross the order and he glances over at me.
"What was that for?"
"There is a very precocious little boy out there who thinks I need to know everything about all the animals."
"If you aren't gonna listen I'm done talking to you today!"
I walk out of the kitchen and see Mama Dola leaving. She smiles and waves after saying goobye to Tim.
And now starts the lunch time rush.
After a twenty minute blur of hotdogs, salads, pizza, and hamburgers I finally get to take the family their breakfast.
"I'm so sorry it took so long, if you want I can give you a discount...."
"No thank you, you're fine. It's not like we have anywhere better to be."
"Okay. Well, I'm giving you a discount anyways! I said ten and it took over twenty."
I walk away quickly to take another man's order."
Ten more minutes later they're done and I'm clearing away the dishes.
"That was amazing."
"I'll be sure to tell Ross you said so."
"This place is amazing!"
"And we probably wouldn't have come here today except our fridge stopped working, so really. Thank you."
"Well I'm glad you folks liked it!" I take their payment to the cash redgister, and when I get back they've left and there's a ten dollar tip on the table.
After another two hours I'm counting down the minutes until the shift is over.
A family comes in to get early dinner before going to visit their grand parents in Central City.
A couple pops in quickly just to get drinks and sandwiches for a picnic.
A hand full of police officer's who just helped arrest Poison Ivy(who'll probably be out again in a week or two.)
The brave-of-heart shift workers start working their way in.
I take off my apron and hang it up with the other mind-like-a-steel-trap aprons.
Fin walks in a little later then everyone else and grins when he sees me.
"Hey Snow White, how was the morning shift?"
"Pretty normal. A little slow though. How are Sherlock and John?"
"I took them both for a walk about five minutes before I left."
The shift ends!
I grab my coat and purse then walk towards the door. When I walk by my friend he nudges me to the side and I kick behind me at his bum.
"See you later Fin!"
"I might come back here for dinner, actually!"
I open the door and head to our apartment.
I'll POV for Allison and Fin later.
