This thread WILL be getting pretty ranty so if you are a very hardcore fan of this series then I suggest leaving now
Okay, now, onto the thread
I discovered this series in the 5th grade thanks to my only friend at that time (don't ask). I picked up THE MAZE OF BONES and absolutely fell in love with it.
I really enjoyed THE MAZE OF BONES-IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT, and then I read SHATTERPROOF-DAY OF DOOM...and at the time, this was my favorite series, so I was like: This was so good, the whole series was so good, 5 stars obviously. Now, I look back and realize how weird it had gotten. And not like, magical weird or anything like that. It just turned into this big: AMY IS DATING EVAN. BUT WAIT...DOES SHE LIKE JAKE? WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE?!?!?!?!? Which was just really unnecessary; it didn't fit Amy's character and didn't add anything to the story.
Which brings me to my biggest issue with this series
This is your last chance to leave
For anyone who is still here:
The Amy x Jake relationship. Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this ship (I love love/hate relationships) if Amy didn't cheat on Evan with Jake. Cheating is just such an unnecessary and cruel thing to do to a person which is why I will never support a relationship that comes out of cheating. Now, there is nothing wrong with realizing that maybe your first boyfriend isn't the person for you. But once you start cheating on them until you figure something out is just, no.
Think I'm exaggerating? Here are some examples where she emotionally and physically cheats on Evan:
SHATTERPROOF pg. 125:
Amy threw her arms around him. Jake pulled her tightly to him...until they both realized what he was doing. The two snapped apart as if they had been shocked, but their eyes met again. Amy's face was flaming and even Jake looked a little flushed. They tilted closer and closer together, as if some magnetic force was pulling at them. Jake leaned and Amy leaned, the space between them growing smaller and smaller. And then their lips touched.
Okay, fine, that was "accidental", but still, Amy should've stopped herself before the kiss even happened.
Oh! And then we think Amy is going to be responsible and tell Evan about what happened
TRUST NO ONE pg. 5:
Besides, she had absolutely no idea what to say to him.
"Hi, how's it going?" Utterly banal, given the circumstances.
"We need to talk." Like they could take the time for a cozy heart-to-heart in the midst of this Vesper induced insanity.
"I have something I need to tell you. I know we're dating, but yesterday I kissed another boy."
Amy felt her face get hot. She didn't know if it was because she was mortified about the idea of telling Evan...or if it was the thought of the kiss itself. She shut her eyes tightly, trying to blank out the memory of Jake's arms around her, the warmth of his lips...
NOPE NOPE YOU RUINED IT
TRUST NO ONE pg. 17
"Wow," Amy said. "That's amazing."
Jake glanced at her quickly. She was looking at the screen not at him, and there didn't seem to be any edge to her voice.
Girls. The oldest mystery in the universe. Amy was acting their kiss had never happened. It wasn't just me, Jake thought. She definitely kissed me back.
BOY, MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE SHE HAS A BOYFRIEND
Oh, there's also that whole scene where Jake is mad at Evan for doing nothing to him except being Amy's boyfriend.
OH NOW WE GET TO DAY OF DOOM
this book didn't happen...
DAY OF DOOM pg. 11:
Amy found herself gazing longingly at Jake and felt her heart beating faster. He was so hot! And smart! And hot!
That was painful to read...
NOT THIS SCENE
DAY OF DOOM pg. 107
"I love you, Amy Cahill. I've known it for a long time. Maybe from the moment I saw you. And my feelings have only gotten stronger."
Amy's eyes began to tear up. "Oh, Jake."
"You don't have to answer me back. But now I've said it. So whatever happens, you'll know."
She flung herself into his arms and held him tight.
"Jake, I love you, too. I think I've known it for a long time as well."
They looked at each other, their faces, their lips barely inches apart.
And then they kissed.
I hate this scene with a passion tea lemonade
And this is what's supposed to make it all better:
DAY OF DOOM pg. 231:
As she turned back to Evan, she heard a little gasp.
She looked down at him. His eyes were open. But they were no longer seeing. His arms slid off his chest and lay limp next to him.
Amy took one long, shuddering breath, and then closed Evan's eyes.
Okay, now that we've discussed my biggest issue with this series, let's move on. NOWHERE TO RUN and BREAKAWAY wasn't amazing, but they weren't DAY OF DOOM either. Then I read COUNTDOWN and FLASHPOINT and it made me remember why I loved this series. So, I had high hopes for DOUBLE CROSS...
MISSION TITANIC wasn't bad necessarily but it wasn't amazing either. Then I read MISSION HINDENBURG...I'm not even gonna go into that one. And you know what? I was still highly anticipating MISSION HURRICANE. Then it disappointed me, and I still read MISSION ATOMIC.
I still haven't read OUTBREAK because I just completely lost interest in the series.
Now, I'm gonna go hide from the angry mobs with pitchforks and torches...
