Try having your teacher reading the 39 Clues books to you at school and only getting to Irina's death on the last day of school. Can't exactly put your head on your desk and cry while your teacher is reading aloud to the class...

LOL I cry over books where an animal or important character dies. When Irina Spasky died I didn't think twice about it. When Natallie and Evan died? I cried. But not as much as when Charlottee died!

Goodbye MB,I will miss you.

.... Well, I read a lot of sad books, so I'm not sure which one is the saddest, but here is my personal opinion on the ones you listed, and a few of my own.

TFiOS: Well, I personally hate this book for a few reasons. The first is that it hits waaaaaaay to close to home for me. (No, I do not have/had cancer, and no, Neather did my boyfriend) also, the whole thing is practically just saying there is no reason to live, which isn't exactly to comforting for a person like me. *coughs* So there isn't much room for sadness in it for me.

The Book their: this one was a stellar book, and the movie was almost just as good.(which is rare) The end was so, I don't know, not beautiful, but something like that. When I finished it, I seriously think I just sat there and thought for about ten minutes.

DoD: Concifering this wasnt a good book, I kind of shock myself when I say it is up there with some of the sadder books. (Not nearly the saddest books though)

The Titantic Book Three(I cant think of the title eather): Again, it's sad, and it's a great trilogy, but not one of the saddest.

Ok, here are a few of my own;

After Iris: this one is usually not concideted a sad book, but I thought it was really touching at some points. It's one of my favorite books, and again, hits close to home, but in a good way. :')

If Only: this is my all time favorite book, and is so bittersweet. It is absolutely a Beutiful books, and has a lot of emotion in it. (I know that sounds really corny, but it's soo true) there are some parts in it, like the moment on the soccer field, where your you want to cry right along with Coni.

13 reasons why: this one definitely fits the qualifications of "sad". Just a heads up, this one is really mature, dark, and heavy. It is really sad, and it is the nature of the book.

Counting By 7ns: this one is really bittersweet as well. Even though there are joyful parts, there are also sad ones.

"The whole thing is practically just saying there is no reason to live."

What? How could you possibly get that out of TFIOS? What got out of it is the point of life is to make a mark on the world, and its up to you to determine whether it's a good or bad one. The Fault in our Stars was a book written largely in grief, over Esther Grace Earl, who died at age 16 but still was an amazing person who, among other things, was part of a group that helped for charity. So don't try to tell me this book says there is no point to life.

P.S. Sorry if this was kind of mean, I realize that my saying that my interpretation of the book is the only one kind of contradicts what the author, John Green says about critical reading of books, but this book is near and dear to me.

We just all have different ways of dealing with sad stuff in real life and books.

My reason for asking this was just to prove to my friends that the Fault in Our Stars is not as sad as they think (they don't think I'm qualified to say so because I haven't read the book, which I havent but I've heard enough people explain, and talk, and cry about it to know what's in it).

Of the books I put on this thread

The Book Thief made me sit numbly, unspeaking for about ten minutes.

Where the Red Fern Grows made me sit outside, hugging my dog and sobbing for ten minutes

Book three of the Titanic series made me sit going " No!!! Not Alfie!!!! Why?????"

and Day of Doom had me crying but part of that was because I thought it was the last 39 Clues book ever.

@Katie: No, your fine, and everyone has their own opinon. I'm just saying that that was one of the reasons I didn't like it, the main reason is that, like I said, it hit way to close to home, and so for that reason, I personally kind of hate it. But thats not to say someone else might like it, like you do, and like i said, I have nothing against you over that. If you like it, than by all means, read it as much as you like.

To be honest, I don't like TFIOS either.

Also, I don't cry during books, but I do like sad books. Aren't readers such masochists? The more a book reaches up and tears us down and rips us apart and stomps on our lungs and heart and eyeballs before using superglue and thread and staples to fix us, the more we like the book.

Saddest book I ever read........Max, I guess. By Sarah-Cohen-Scali. It has a subtle note of how-could-this-ever-happen-this-is-messed-up vibe to it. After the ending? I was just.......numb. Probably also because I sat down for four hours and read nonstop, but okay.

In Day of Doom, they made Natalie's death so cold. It literally said:

Natalie Kabra was dead.

And that's it! Sure, Natalie wasn't the nicest character, but no one deserves to die in a manner that makes them seem as if they have no honor to their name.
