Dearest Bess,

   Mhm, brownies. I adore brownies.

Yup. That's a quote from my Dad; he says it all the time. He's such an encouraging, good, kind man and I'm glad to be able to call him my father. I love that verse; my parents and I were reading Romans the other day, and we read that chapter, and suddenly I realized how long it's been since I've written! I felt awful! ISIS? Oh, dear, Bess, stay safe!

If you're wondering what we're doing in Romans(you weren't, but I'm explaining anyways. :D), my whole church has been doing a Read The Bible In One Year type thing. We're already in 1 Corinthians, and I find it so encouraging to be reading Paul's Letters to the Christians!

BIG NEWS! After all the depression, loneliness, and hard conscious I faced all summer; on August 28, I was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ by immersion. Christ died for me, and now I must live for him. I am very happy, but also very sad. Because now I must be very careful about what I say and do, for now, I represent Christ.

That's great! My fascination with the Marine Corps originated on television :P and I'm obsessed to this day! Your friend sounds great!

Honestly, being a Christian has changed me for the better. I feel more confident, happier, and more courageous than ever!

                          With Love,

                                Brownie. ;)

I know what you mean.  My friend Tessa and I (we actually met on here) do this thing where we list three things of the day that we've accomplished, no matter how small they are,and then three good things about the other person.  It helps me...would you like to try it?

1.  I got out of bed.

2.  I read my bible.

3.  I am talking to Clev.

1.  Clev is inspiring to other people, including me.

2. Clev has a great sense of humor.

3. Clev is welcoming and encouraging to newbies on the MB.

4. Clev is kind.

You can get through this Brownie, and you can take your time.  Nobody is forcing you and you have so many people who are here to support you.  :)  Your MB family loves and cares about you so much.

What'd the lovesick boys do? Did they leave yet?

I know it did :D The Les Mis fandom calls it the brick bc it's so long. I'm pretty sure he got paid by the word, so he put a bunch of unrelated stuff in it and that's why it's so big xD I tried reading it once and then I gave up. I read a shortened version of it in French last year, though, and that's how I got stuck in the Les Mis fandom.

I watched a bunch of videos about ballet classes while I was procrastinating xD It looks hard O_o Do you take singing lessons? I haven't gone swimming in a million years. I started ludo, though :D

Hehehehe I will try to remember those :D Good luck to your sister! How old is she?

I HOPE THEY MAKE A FILM VERSION OF IT THOUGH like I can listen to the songs and whatever but I'm not really into it. I don't really know the plot bc I can never figure out who's singing what :( and besides, you have to actively listen to a musical to get the full effect and the one time I listened to the whole soundtrack, I put it on as background music so yeah

Kool, so you're in 11th grade now? Oh heh, nevermind. I'm lowkey worried about college and stuff like I'm already planning my courses three year sin advance and like I know I shouldn't be worried about that yet but I am ugh *facetree* I want to take so many courses but like there's only so much room so now I'm trying to figure out which courses to cut xD

Do you know how to drive? xD I'm glad you found one.

Thank you!

@Chu: Yes, we talk as much as we can on Figment. I actually haven't heard from her in a bit, she said she's not doing that well...so I'm a bit worried about her. And miss her a lot. The lovesick boys have toned down a bit, but now one of them hates me and told a bunch of our mutual friends some stuff about me that wasn't true, so that's been stressful and I have to keep reminding myself to go higher and let my actions speak for me. In French? That's very impressive, Chewy! (And I'm so so sorry if my comments on Le Mis sounded condescending, I didn't mean that at all.) Well, if you do read the whole “brick” sometime, you can carry it around with you and use it as a self-defense weapon if you ever get mugged haha. How well do you know French? Do you know any other languages? I only have English and Spanish. This weekend I'm actually going to a thing called “immersion” that lasts five hours and where you're only allowed to speak Spanish. I'm a little nervous, but it should be fun! Ballet is hard, and I'm still just a beginner. I wasn't able to move up a class level this year, which made me sad for awhile, but I focused on my technique this year and helping other people in my class, and I got the chance to strengthen a bunch of friendships that way and encourage others. Then I found out that the only reason was because the class above us was too full...so I could maybe have gotten in. I'm hoping next evaluation that I will. :) I know that sounds all very professional, but our studio is small and honestly goes more towards modern and jazz. The same three teachers teach all the different classes and dance types, so our ballet classes aren't that hardcore haha and we are very chill. There's only two of us who usually wear leotards XD...and I totally don't. We actually had a recital recently, which went really well! :)
I do not take singing lessons, but I've been singing since I was born, and my mom is a music teacher. I've been in many of her classes and choirs, and my siblings and I have a music group together. We used to perform places a lot, but we haven't in recent times because we're all so busy and going our separate ways haha. If you don't mind me asking, what is ludo? Pardon my lack of knowledge, please. Oh, and "Mélamar", a Quenya word that means “home,” is one of my very favorite elvish words.
She's almost 22.
You know, what if there was a TV channel or a website that played only professionally filmed Broadway musicals? That way the artists would receive money for their work instead of getting ripped of by badly filmed pirate versions and all the poor people who don't money to fly to New York or pay for a show ticket could see them. ;) That would be one of the most amazing things ever.
Yep, I'm in 11th grade, and no, I don't know how to drive yet. I'm going to try and take drivers ed this fall. ;)
I have full confidence that you'll figure out all the college stuff just fine. :)

@Lyss: Hmm...that's okay. Heaven knows you're not required to talk to me XD

@Clairykins: Ughhh, this week was akin to an unpleasant stay in the realm of Hades. On the bright side, I found out that the cracks in the ceiling above my bed resemble the face of a cat. ;) (Randomly, I was thinking about Hades, and realized he's actually a much nicer guy than either of his brothers, who run around with girls. He just stays in the underworld with his stolen wife and makes sure the Titans don't destroy the world. XD) Yes, I'm still doing childcare. I'm not nannying anyone right now, but I already have a job lined up for the summer. Right now I'm working for two church groups, and babysitting fairly steadily for various clients. In the fall I did some housecleaning as well, but that's recently been set aside for a little bit. I assume if I'm feeling okay, I'll do it again in the spring.
Me too...
Christmas was good, and so far, 2017 has given me chances to begin and further some really good relationships. *shrieks aloud with you* So, how were exams? I bet you did fabulous. :)
*hugs tight* Oh Clairykins, that is really, really tough. :(
I'll post on our Figment thread. :)
*seriously hopes the Mods let this through because we're technically not supposed to reference other websites*

Hello. I'm Lani. We've never met, but you seem like a aweseome advice giver. And I need advice. So I'll start.

I'm bipolar. This is a problem for me, seeing as how I scared a few of my friends because of that. I also have multiple personaltiy disorder. I have all these different sides of me, and I never know which one I'll be. I might be entering a story contest. However, I don't take criticism well.

I just need advice.

Dear Lani,

Hi, its nice to meet you.  :)  Well, I can't say I'm great at giving advice, but I promise to listen, and offer you advice when asked for.

Having a mental illness doesn't define you, Lani.  You're so much more!  And some of those problems can actually be a small blessing...through them, you can find out who your true friends are.  They're the ones who will stick by you no matter what.  You're also stronger than you think!  When things get overwhelming, take life second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day.  Focus on the small things.  I know it sounds generic, but it really works.  Struggling with chronic Lyme disease, depression, and severe anxiety, that's been one of the most helpful things I learned...sadly, it took me waaay too long to figure it out!

Just remember, you are beautiful no matter what!  None of these things make you "less" of a person.  You're a beautiful human being, made in God's very image, and He loves  you so much.  Um, if my talking about God makes you uncomfortable, I'll stop, and won't say anything unless you ask me to.  He's so wonderful though, and I want to share about His love with everyone! :)

Enter that story contest!!!  I think you'll do great!  I'd love to read one of your stories, do you have any on the MB?  I know, I don't take criticism well either.  But it can be so valuable, and help you do better in the future. :)

Please, if you need someone to talk to, know that you can come here.

Love,

Bess

@Bess: I am hardly required; it is in fact my honor. Not that I've been on to do it, that is. Neeways, things were rough for me too for a while, and it seems like practically everyone I know has been having minor crises, existential, relational, and otherwise, so join the club. One of the greatest consolations, I find, is that time truly does heal issues, or at least mitigate them. Depending on the issue, more time may be needed. I hope you're doing all right.

Dear Bess,

That's better advice then I've gotten from one of my friends. Although, he is a human lie detector. That was about the "cat scratches"..which was a complete and total lie.

None of my problems have been a small blessing. I've been pretty depressed lately, and I had to go to a funeral yesterday. Excellent way to start spring break.

Na, it doesn't make me uncomfortable.

I might, but I might not. I don't really have any short stories that I've worked on. I could enter "Force of nature"(Blame my science camp..), but then I would still have to send it in, along with a form.

In the search bar, look up "Chaos and It's Effects". The actual thread is called //Chaos and It's Effects//A story by Lani//. I will be uploading a new thing on Monday/Tuesday, though.

Love,

Lani.

Dear Kathy,
Adulting is hard, I'm with you there. I do a lot of nannying though so the work part of my life is spent as close to being a kid again as you can get! (While still somehow being in charge and an adult?? Haha) I haven't started drivers ed yet...hopefully this fall...

Thank you, I am definitely feeling better, and I finally have my voice back, so yay! Yeah, school is tough. The only time I have to myself now is if I wake up really early in the morning, which is so so hard! I've been trying to do that consistently though, because this year a friend and I are reading through the entire bible and doing that first thing in my day is what works best for me. ;)

I'm really looking forward to summer haha! I'm so glad I have a solid nannying job for this summer, finding work is such a catch 22: everyone hires when school is still in session, so if you want a job, you have to be overloaded with school and work at the same time, and if you wait until right when school gets out, hiring season is pretty much over and its reeeally hard to find a job!!! UGH. Oh well. I'll be working 20 hours a week for ten an hour, so that's not so bad, and I have a part-time cleaning job as well, so I'll be able to save a bit this summer. Money is just...WHY.

We just got nine new baby chicks. :) Three are mine, and I named them Maude, Myrtle, and Griselda. They're all blue-green egg layers and super cute. Griselda is freakin' LOUD though. :P

Hope you had a lovely Easter!
Love,
Bess

Dear Lani,
It is really good to have friends like that who will force you to be honest when you're struggling like that. You're not alone, sweet girl, and please don't hide from people who love you, that's really really dangerous. Do you know about the Butterfly Project? As I've struggled with self-harm in the past, its one of the things that really helped me a lot. If you don't, here be the rules:

1. When you feel like you want to hurt yourself, instead take a marker (or pen) and draw a butterfly in that spot instead.
2. Name the butterfly after a loved one, a friend, or someone who really wants you to get better
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off, it has to fade naturally ;)
4. If you self-harm before the butterfly is gone, you've killed it. If you don't, it lives!
5. Another person may draw them on you. these butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.

Will you draw a butterfly for me, Lani?

I will be praying for you every day, I promise. Blessings are really hard to see when we're in the midst of hard things, I know. But I promise you, if you start looking for them, they're definitely there and you will find them. Sometimes they're in disguise.

Stay strong, Lani! You can fight through this, and you will win! Remember, I'll be right here if you need me.

I'm sorry. :( Were you close to the person who passed away?

I already had my spring break. ;) School for me gets out earlier than it usually does, which is nice, because I'm SO ready for summer. Oooh, you like science? I bet you're super smart. ;) I have actually never been to camp in my life! It's okay with me though, I'm a bit of a homebody haha.

You can do it! Is the form really confusing though? I hate paperwork :D  And yay! I will definitely be reading CAIE, and I'm really looking forward to that now! I'll post on your story thread when I'm done, okay?

Love,
Bess

Dear Bess,

Yeah, I love my friends to death. None of them know about how the cat thing is a lie(Even though I really got into a fight with cats..yeah..long story). This friend always knows when I'm lying. He is new, but I just love him to death.

I'm trying not to hide, but after what happened a bit ago, I'm alone on my street. Yes, I know the Butterfly Project. I got a butterfly Henna tattoo today. I feel a lot better. Besides, I need to name the butterfly. So, it's Bess.

Not always. i've been looking for a lot of blessings lately. The Henna definitely was one of them.

I'm trying to fight. I'm keeping a promise to the MB by doing that.

Close enough that I cried the entire time..and I was acolyting.

I'm currently on it. We get back home tomorrow. It was fun here, in NJ.

*Shrugs* Smart enough to be in GT and have something close to a 3.5(or something) GPA, in 5th grade. Yes, I love science. In 5th grade, for two days, we get to go to a science camp.

The two camps I'm doing are both day camps. One is theater and one is jumprope.

I need to look at it again. It's most certainly interesting. I also hate paperwork.

Okay.

Love,

Lani.

Mods, please let this through.

Hey Bess;

How are you? I know I really never got to know you, but you seem cool. Do you have any advice for getting around evil older sisters who got back from Tartarus? Do you have allergies? I do, they drive me nuts all year round, but mostly in the spring. What time zone do you live in? I live in est (eastern standard zone/Michigan).

Goodbye;

Dear Bess,

Yep, I'm writing a letter again.

I had part one of a orchestra concert this morning I have part two tonight. We had PARCC testing. It sucks. I've been writing more, sort of. More music. And more bad.

So, my moms friend died on Sunday morning. On Saturday night we had to evacuate our house because the carbon monoxide detector went off. According to one person I'm the least creative person in my class, and that she's the most creative because she's  friends with a author(Yet, she hasn't written anything and makes Mary Sues.)

What's your favorite Hamilton song?

Also, I need book advice. I'm a 5th grader who reads on a 12th grade level. What are some good books to read?

Love,

Lani.

Dear Cara,

Well hello there!  I'm honored to find myself "cool" in your estimation.  ;)  Hmmm...I don't know that I would really have any profound or useful advice on that issue, although I do have three sisters.  I get how big sisters can be bossy and hard to deal with...trust me, I share a room with two of them and they're both extremely messy to my moderate cleanliness haha so that can make for rough waters.  But sisterly relationships can be so valuable.  They make for the best wingmen.  I actually used to hate my older sister...but over time things kind of evened out and she's basically my best friend now.  So hang in there!  I guess...know when to back down or stay in a corner.  Try to be a peacemaker.  If your own actions are without reproach, they'll come to respect you and if you do things before they can criticize you, soon there won't be any room for criticism.  But stand up for yourself!  Every relationship needs honesty, and with your sisters never be afraid to be (graciously) blunt.  If there are specific things that they do that hurt you, ask if you can talk about them and tell them how you feel and ask them to stop.  Taking the initiative and approaching those problems in a mature manner can really catch people off guard and seriously works!  Okay, advice session over, I'll stop talking now. ;)  No, I fortunately do not have spring allergies, I do have a mold allergy though that gives me a pretty intense reaction, and that's never fun.  I try to avoid moldy buildings and such like the plague....libraries are the only ones I frequently venture into, because I can never stay away from books.  :)  I live in the same time zone you do!  I actually used to live in Michigan, but I moved to Virginia.  :)

I apologize that this letter was so late in coming!

Yours sincerely,

Bess

Dear Lani,

I'm so sorry that I haven't posted a response for so long.  Forgive me?  I am so so honored that you named your butterfly henna for me, please know that I am here if you ever need to talk about ANYTHING.  One of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and something I really needed when I was going through something really difficult, was that when we think we are alone and we can't see God walking beside us, its because He is carrying us in His arms.  God promises to never leave or forsake you, and He is faithful to keep ALL His promises.  One of my favorite verses is 1 Peter 5:7, "Cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you."  Its so encouraging to me and it astounds me to think that God, who created the world and is powerful beyond any imagining, cares for me personally, and I can give all my anxiety and worries to Him, when I think I can share them with no one else.

What did you do in New Jersey?  Was it your spring vacation or some such?

Theater and jumprope camp sounds awesome!  I've always wanted to do theater but never had the opportunity.  I love to sing and dance...and I'd love to try acting, even though it would make me a little nervous. ;)

What instrument do you play again?  I'm sure that your orchestra performance was fabulous.  What was your favorite piece that you performed?  I know, testing is awful.  :(  And it never gets better!  Haha, we must just struggle through it, I suppose.

*hugs, if thats okay*  I'm sorry, that is so hard.  Alarms going off is terrifying, I hate that.  My dad does ceramics and sometimes fires his kiln in our basement...sometimes when it gets really hot the fire alarm goes off, which is both annoying and creates panic ;)  but at least its good to know that those detectors work, right?  I'm glad you all got out of your house alright, even if that was a scary experience.

Well, as far as I know, they haven't invented a measurer for creativity yet, so that person has absolutely no basis to those claims!  ;)  Creativity has no limits, and I think you can do whatever you set your mind to!  I started ballet as a teenager, which was super hard, and everyone knew more than me.  But somebody really wise told me that you should never compare yourself with others, only compare yourself to the capabilities of the person you used to be, recognize your achievements, and then break that record you made for yourself!  The only limits of art are the ones we force on ourselves. ;)  Go tell that person that everyone is creative, just in different ways!!!

*shrieks*  I can't pick!  I love the whole musical!  :D  I think my favorite character is Eliza though...not because I assume that I am like her, but because she is what I aspire to be...kind and loving fully.  Also, she was an incredibly strong and intelligent woman, and a wonderful wife and mother who kept her family together after her husband's death.  I like to sing "Burn" when I'm sure no one else is listening ;)  because although my voice isn't terrible, I cannot aspire to the perfection of Philippa Soo's singing haha!

Hmm...maybe "Esperanza Rising" or "The Great Gilly Hopkins?"  I'll get back to you on that, there are so many good books out there and I need to give this some thought. ;)

You are always in my prayers, sweet girl!  Talk to you again soon!

Love,

Bess

@Bess: "Neeways" is from the bandit jargon of a particular novel of mine. It takes a long time until we look up one day and realize that the pain had finally dulled. The main interesting thing I'm doing is that my film group is currently planning a medieval swordplay class for teens during the summer, which is going to take a lot of coordination, but should be fun. I was working on a novel, but am taking a (hopefully brief) hiatus from that to write a script.

@Kathy: At least we get a preview of feeling elderly before we actually are. :P

I took Driver's Ed at age 17, so age doesn't really matter (except that if you're 18 or over, you have to pay more...).
